    Definition

    Hepatitis C is a disease where inflammation occurs in the liver as the body’s immunoreaction to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

     

    Cause

    Hepatitis C is transmitted through bodily fluid, such as blood, that has been infected with HCV. It can be transmitted in the course of sexual contact, blood transfusion, use of medicine containing blood, reuse of contaminated syringes, use of unsterilized needles, piercing and tattooing.

     

    Symptoms

    Patients can become easily tired and experience a loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Myalgia, slight fever and darkening of the color of urine can also be experienced. In severe cases, jaundice occurs where the color of skin and eyes becomes yellow. Hepatitis C can also lead to death.

     

    Treatmen

    The standard treatment of hepatitis C is through the administration of drugs, such as Peginterferon and Ribavirin. Complete cure of hepatitis C can be expected through administration of these drugs for 24 - 48 weeks.
