Global Aesthetic Trends Driven by Facial Contouring and Facelift
This is Dr. Song Sin-young, Medical Director at Allheart Plastic Surgery Clinic.
The Korean Wave, best known through K-pop, has now expanded into medical tourism and K-beauty. More than just setting trends in makeup and fashion, K-beauty draws countless visitors by speaking to the very essence of beauty.
Today, areas like Myeong-dong, Apgujeong, Cheongdam, and Gangnam Station in Seoul have become hotspots for international visitors seeking a youthful look, clear skin, slowed aging, and wellness. From hair removal and mole removal to laser skin tightening and injectable skin hydrators, these treatments have become a must-do part of the Korean beauty experience. Thanks to Korea’s affordable yet high-quality beauty market, more and more visitors are coming not only for the procedures themselves but also for the glowing reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations that follow.
While Korea is often celebrated for its skilled cosmetic techniques, the deeper and long-standing core of K-beauty has been plastic surgery itself. Beyond eyelid and nose surgery, Korea has led advancements in procedures such as facial contouring and facelifts. The Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (KSPRS), one of the world’s leading academic associations, continues to serve as a hub where plastic surgeons from around the globe come each year to learn. While non-surgical treatments such as skincare play a supportive role in maintaining appearance, plastic surgery can truly redefine one’s pursuit of beauty. In today’s era, where slow aging has become a key focus, it is natural that attention is drawn to sagging skin and wrinkles caused by gravity and age. And when it comes to addressing these concerns, plastic surgery remains indispensable.
Across the globe, people are striving for happiness and the desire to age gracefully. In response, wellness has become a focus in every aspect of daily life—from what we eat and wear to skincare, sleep, and even mental well-being. No matter the country, culture, or gender, aging brings inevitable changes: wrinkles form, skin begins to sag, the face can appear larger than in youth, the eyes seem more hollow and smaller, and even the nose may look less defined, giving the face a tired appearance. While these changes are natural, it is never easy to let go of the vitality and energy that come with a youthful appearance. Today, plastic surgery is no longer just about looking prettier or chasing a Cinderella-like transformation. When performed safely and in moderation, it can help turn back the clock a little, offering modern individuals a positive way to enhance their quality of life.
Among plastic surgery procedures, facial contouring is a field that has seen particularly notable advancement in Korea. In recent years, the K Bone Forum has highlighted the dramatic results of facial contouring surgeries, including cheek reduction, square jaw reduction, and genioplasty. Beyond these bone procedures, less invasive techniques such as non-surgical facial contouring, double-chin muscle tightening, and mini facelifts have also gained popularity for refining a wide, sagging face or reducing a heavy double chin without directly reshaping the bone.
During my residency in plastic surgery, I trained in areas rarely encountered in the cosmetic field, including microsurgical reconstruction and limb replantation. Afterward, as I performed facial bone contouring surgeries, I developed a strong interest in facial contour and overall facial harmony. At Allheart Plastic Surgery Clinic, I have since expanded to a wide range of procedures that refine the facial line by addressing the soft tissues, keeping pace with the evolving trends in aesthetic surgery. This naturally led me to perform lifting procedures and facelifts as well.
A facelift is currently considered the ultimate lifting procedure. The key to a successful facelift lies in meticulous surgical technique. Drawing on my residency experience in microsurgical reconstruction, I believe this background has allowed me to perform procedures with a level of precision that sets my work apart.
The Korean aesthetic market is known for offering a wide range of treatments and advanced surgical procedures at relatively affordable prices. Non-surgical treatments have the advantage of being simple, requiring little downtime, and providing quick, immediate results. However, because the effects are often short-lived, those who feel unsatisfied, desire more dramatic changes, or want longer-lasting results may find that plastic surgery is the right choice.
