    Make a Beautiful Voice

    You may have heard of the story of Pandora's Box, which has been reviewed as various plays and artworks. This beautiful catastrophe comes from the poem, 'Theogony', written by Hesiod in the eighth century BC. Pandora was given gifts from all the gods. Hermes, the god of messengers, presents her an attractive and a persuasive voice. The fact that the gods have not only given her just beauty, but also the voice, to make Pandora a perfect woman let us know having a beautiful voice is one of the important parts in completing perfect beauty.

    When we think about ‘perfect beauty', generally beautiful body comes up with beautiful face and appearance as necessary conditions. However, beautiful voice comes out of beautiful body. IF our body is healthy and beautiful, the vocal organs are becoming healthy, so as a consequence beautiful voices will follow. This is why Pandora had to have a beautiful body in order to have a beautiful and clear voice.

    Voices are made from vocal organs which are a part of our body. The vocal organ is divided into the lung which is the generator, the vocal cords of the larynx which is the vibrator, the pharyngeal cavity (the space inside the throat) which is the resonator, the oral cavity, tongue and lips which are the sounding organs. The voice is generated by moving these vocal organs. We put the air in our lungs as we breathe and while it passes through the airways, it vibrates the vocal cords in the larynx. Sound waves generated at this point, passing through the pharyngeal cavity, produce a tone, and form pronunciation when going through the oral cavity and mouth.

    Then, what is the ‘charming and persuasive voice’ that Hermes presented to Pandora? To be persuasive, we can feel the authenticity when we communicate. In addition, one’s point should be harmonized with tones and voices so that counterparts could assent through it.

    Generally, 'persuasive voice' means a chord-rich sound. For a richer chord, you have to keep doing sound frequency modulation from the fundamental to the higher. To make this sound, the pharyngeal and oral structures in size should be wide enough and the vocal mucous membrane should be clean, too. Also, enough and constant air supply from the lung has to be maintained. However, these functions are often not working well due to improper lifestyle or abuse of the vocal cords.

    Excessive drinking or smoking causes inflammation on the pharynx and the larynx, and excessive voice using lowers the vocal capacity. Having a persuasive voice means creating a healthy physical condition. It cannot be overemphasized ‘A good voice comes out of a healthy body’.
