    Pigment Treatment and
    Solution for the Upcoming Spring

Head Director of Widwin Dermatology Clinic, Dr. Jae-Bong Lee

The winter has passed, and comes the spring with warm and bright sunshine. Neglected during the winter, our skin still looks dark and dull in the spring. The main reason is pigmentation disease such as spots, freckles, and nevus of Ota. Many patients commonly presume that all pigmentation disorders would be melasma. But only half the time they are, and the other half are quite often diagnosed to be other diseases such as freckles, blemish, ABNOM (Acquired, Bilateral Nevus of Ota-like Macules), pigmentation and so on. Let us walk you through what Melasma is, why it appears, and what kind of treatment methods there are.

    What is Melasma?

Melasma is a hyperpigmental disease that occurs in the face. Symptoms usually occur in Asians who have dark skin, appearing symmetrically with unclear boundaries on the facial surface which is usually exposed to sunlight. It is true that melasma occurs mainly in females. But, we cannot say that it is uncommon in males, as about 20% of males are reported to have melasma.

Melasma is an irregular hyperkeratotic lesion that appears symmetrically on the cadaveric part of the face.

    Why does melasma occur?

The causes of melasma are various factors such as past hormone imbalance, ultraviolet rays (sunlight), genetic factors, etc. Recently, however, these are considered to be causative factors or aggravating factors rather than direct causes. It is common to see the symptoms of melasma worsen during the pregnancy, under strong sunlight during the spring or summer, or during the use of contraceptive pills.

What is the real look of melasma?

Melasma which is abnormal in the dermis, such as vascular proliferation of the dermis, collagen denaturation, increased

mast cell and fibroblast, in addition to increased pigmentation in the upper epidermis.

A reclamation material categorized under Composite Resin that is a direct adhesion on dental caries. Since it has a near the same colour as teeth, it is also known as the aesthetic restoration material.

More specifically, collagen and elastic fibers, which act as pillars underneath the skin, are destroyed by the epidermal basement membrane covering the outer layers of the skin and the skin's dermis. This is because the skin barrier is not strong and is vulnerable to stimulation or inflammation. In addition, mast cells and fibroblasts secrete many substances that cause inflammation of the skin. When these cells are large in numbers, inflammation increases and blood vessels multiply and all the above reactions can be amplified.
