    Amalgam? Resin? Gold Crown?

Lee, Jae-cheon, the director of Cheongdamn Children’s Dental Center

    About Amalgam

A reclamation material used over 100 years with the method of the equal amount of Mercury and silver made into dough and tamped on the teeth after their dental caries peeled off.

    About Gold Crown

A method that covers the whole surface of a tooth. A popular use is to fit a preformed gold crown on a tooth. Recently, a new approach with the similar coloured for incisor teeth has been in use.

    About Resin

A reclamation material categorized under Composite Resin that is a direct adhesion on dental caries. Since it has a near the same colour as teeth, it is also known as the aesthetic restoration material.

    1. Amalgam, Resin, and Gold Crown: Which to choose? And what are each of the approaches good for?

    - Amalgam: Less cost with medical insurance covered and easy surgery are provided. However, it is not perfect in aesthetic perspective and it is argued that this approach may contain a risk from its Mercury. Amalgam to a baby is not a recommended decision.

    - Resin: It serves the aesthetic perspective and compared to Amalgam, it protects teeth with less materials and has a precautionary effect with its possible companion, sealant. However, it costs more and its difficult method may not be the best choice for less cooperating children. Glass ionomer material that has the similar colour to teeth can be a choice since it provides less intensity and easier method. Glass ionomer material contains fluorine and the reclamation material can be relatively cost-effective.

    - Gold Crown: Gold Crown treatment is an approach used when teeth are weakened from decays or other reasons and cannot tolerate other treatments or there is a high possibility of recurrence. It wraps the whole tooth with gold and it is firm and it lasts long but it does not serve the aesthetic perspective and it costs.

    2. Amalgam, Resin, and Gold Crown: any precautions?

The most important precaution for each treatment would be not to let the tooth decay recur. Tooth decay is a disease where the bacteria in the mouth have decomposition on sugar contents, and the acid created from it melts tooth or teeth. To prevent is to reduce the reason bacteria and limit the ingestion of sugar contents. It is also important to visit a dentist for a scan and find issues at an early stage.

    3. Homeworks after children’s tooth decay treatment? (What to do at home?)

Brushing teeth after a meal and especially a snack is required and children with fine teeth are strongly recommended to use dental floss. Moreover, an effort to provide a diet with less sugar contents is important as well. It helps to prevent dental decays if you visit a dentist regularly and have an oral prophylaxis and fluorine coating.
