WAW Flat FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplant Surgery

Hwang, Seong-Ju (Dr. Hwang's 'HairHair' Hair Transplantation Center)

Hair transplantation is a procedure in which a hair follicle is taken from the occipital region and transplanted to the hair loss part, the frontal part or any other part where hair is needed. In hair transplantation, there are a cutting method (or incision method), which is a method of removing the scalp skin in the shape of a piece of cloth, and a punch method (or non-incision method) that extracts each hair follicle.

Asians such as Koreans have longer hair follicles and harder scalps than the Western people. In order to reduce hair follicle damage, the cutting method is considered more advantageous than the punch method, particularly when transplanting a large amount of hair at once. However, in the case of a small amount of hair transplantation, or in the case of young people who prefer a short hair style, the punch method is also advantageous.

The biggest disadvantage of punch-type hair follicle extraction is the damage to the hair follicles. This is because it is not easy to obtain a healthy and strong hair follicle without damaging the hair follicle. In such a case, the effectiveness of the graft is lowered, and it becomes hard to obtain appropriate cosmetic results. Conventional punches have a cylindrical shape. It was common for Koreans who have deep follicles to have a higher hair follicle injury rate than the Western people. However, using a trumpet-shaped WAW punch developed by a Belgian physician, Jean Devroye, follicle damage rate is significantly reduced. It is a trumpet-like punch that uses the principle of pushing the skin around the hair follicles outward when the punch penetrates the scalp skin. Using the WAW punch, so was I able to significantly reduce the rate of hair follicle injury compared to conventional punches. The reason why this machine is currently popular around the world is because the hair loss rate is minimized. Jean Devroye visited the hair transplantation workshop held in Seoul at the end of May, and performed a surgical operation with me. From this, we once again found that hair follicles were extracted without damaging the hair follicles.

It is expected that the use of this machine for the extraction of hair follicles will be more popular in Asia, including Korea.
